What is OpenAR?
OpenAR is an open source standard for maritime augmented reality overlays that run in web browsers.
It provides a unified interface for combining video feeds, object detection data, and AIS information into interactive visual overlays using established maritime design patterns.
Standardized inputs
Video, detections, and AIS data unified in a simple contract
Web based overlay
Video overlay rendering directly in the browser
OpenBridge components
Reference implementation with maritime UI standards
Why now?
Maritime AR overlays face common challenges. OpenAR provides a standard solution.
Challenges
Proprietary stacks
Custom overlay systems require unique integrations for each implementation
Sync challenges
Difficult to reliably synchronize video, detections, and AIS data
No shared standard
Reusable components exist, but lack a unified overlay contract
Solutions
Faster prototyping
Build and test maritime AR applications rapidly
Reduced rework
Shared contract minimizes custom integration code
Consistent UI
OpenBridge components ensure familiar maritime interfaces
How it works
A simple three-step pipeline from data inputs to interactive overlay
Inputs
Video stream + detection events + AIS data
Standardized data sources feed into the OpenAR pipeline
Timeline sync
Synchronization and replay for testing
All data sources aligned on a common timeline
Output
Web based overlay + interactive AIS UI
Rendered in browser with OpenBridge components
